In Scotland the law permits wild camping (with some exceptions, e.g. near Loch Lomond), though it is best to ask the land owner; In England and Wales (strictly speaking) wild camping is not legal anywhere. It is not enough just to ask the owner, but enforcement varies.

If you are on private land it is not you but the owner that gets in trouble. In National Parks there may be more difficulties than elsewhere.
In England and Wales this comes from planning law (?ordeningsrecht?). For the same reason the +-2000 Certificated Sites and Certificated Locations that are registered with each club are meant for members of that club only. Many British caravanners and motorhome owners belong to both clubs!
